ISOS organized Cilmiwadaag Platform on the theme of “Webi Shabelle Surface Water Availability and Demand Analysis: A Call to Action”, presented by Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan on 24 November 2016, and attended by dozens of scholars and public figures.
Although the Webi Shabelle provides the greatest fresh water resources in Somalia, it is characterized by hydrological water deficit and seasonal gap with low river flow. Additionally, there is poor water use and management due to traditional water use with little scientific support. In this context, Ahmed emphasized that “there is a need for proper water resources use and development”.
Ahmed, in his presentation tried to analyze how the Webi Shabelle could respond to major stresses of demand and supply in terms of water availability in the present and future. He proposed several recommendations in this regard.
The participants presented questions and comments on the research. Also they developed valuable recommendations of how to respond to this situation.
Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan is aspecialist in “Water Resource Management” and worked on researches in this field.
