A discussion forum “cilmiwadaag platform” entitled“Somalia: Mapping the Nexus of Transitional Justice and Peacebuilding” was held on 22nd March 2017, and organised by the Institute of Somali Studies, Mogadishu University.
In the opening remarks, Dr. Ahmed Ali M..Khayre, presented a keynote speech on transitional justice with its concepts and historical background, highlighting the importance of transitional justice in postconflict era, and drawing many examples of application of transitional justice from different countries including, but not limited to , Argentina, Chile, El Salvador, He talked about how transitional justice can contribute to the promotion of human rights and transformation processes in post-conflict countries; And then presented a video clip on this topic.
After the keynote address by Dr. Kheyre and the screening of the video there followed discussions and questions by the participants, who were from different backgrounds, including activists in civil society, academics, legal officers from the government and UN staff members. They engaged in productive discussions on how it is possible to apply transitional justice in Somali context and the challenges facing
In the session’s discussion, some participants stressed the importance of the application of traditional customary andIslamic religion in the transitional justice in the Somali Context.
Finally, some suggested the significance of increasing such forum discussions and debates among the various groups of Somali society for raising awareness and promoting peace.
